Bio

Mario Gomez is a Honduran pianist and collaborative artist based in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He began playing piano at the age of 10 and started formal classical piano studies at 14 at the Escuela de Música Victoriano López in his hometown of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. In 2020, he moved to the United States to pursue his studies at Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSU).

At NSU, Mario has excelled as both a performer and educator. For the past two years, he has been a dedicated piano instructor at the NSU Music Academy, fostering a passion for music in his students. He has also contributed to a wide variety of ensembles, including the NSU Jazz Orchestra, NSU Jazz Combos, the Forsyth Jazz Collective, the Daniel Scott Quartet, Orpheus, and Cane River Singers. Mario serves as a pianist for the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Choir and the Rock Island Baptist Church Choir.

Mario’s artistic achievements have been widely recognized. He is the winner of both the 2022 and 2025 McCutcheon Honors Recitals in the keyboard area and was named Alternate at the 2024 MTNA State Competition. He earned the Silver Medal at the 2023 Virtuoso Artists Festival (Seattle International Piano Competition) and Second Prize at the 2023 Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. Other accolades include First Prize at the 2022 Romantic Music Competition (Charleston International Music Competition) and the Gold Medal at the 2021 Bach Festival (Seattle International Piano Competition). Additionally, he was a finalist in the 1st National Piano Competition of Honduras in 2016.

Currently in his senior year, Mario studies under Dr. Francis Yang and takes jazz piano lessons with Yuki Shibata. In his free time, he enjoys reading Latin American literature, watching art cinema, playing with his beloved cat Michiberto, and spending time with close friends.
